After 11 years in the police force, the 4.6L V8 crown victoria police interceptor will be put to rest. Its replacement, ford's next generation police interceptor sedan will be based on the taurus' platform with two engine options: the 3.5L V6 and the Ecoboost version of the same engine which according to Ford will produce 20% better fuel efficiency as well as 15% less greenhouse emissions when compared to a naturally aspirated engine. That means the flashing lights in your rear-view mirror may well be accompanied by a four wheel drive with twin-turbos spooling to get you to pull over. Now that's a tune that will invite to put the pedal to the metal rather than pulling over!
Along with the twin-turbo version, an Explorer-based version will also be offered. The 3.5L V6 should produce a not so wimpy 280 horsepower. The interceptor brothers will be equipped with plenty of gadgets like a rear-view camera, Police-Calibrated power train and transmission, police tuned suspension and level III ballistic door panels.
So what's the verdict? Although certainly not Italy's specialized highway patrol car, the new interceptor couple should allow the local police forces to crack down on speeders and crooks easier. Maybe it will turn the parking lot of a dunkin donuts into a showroom too!

Enh the crown vics used to put out 280 with a v8. Now ur sayin u hav a v6 w the same power. Not too impressed. Its the same power with a smaller engine but still heavy. Lik the cop version of the charger v8 hemi put out 400+ hp but only ran 14.4 as a best time in the 1/4 mile. If sombody was dumb enough to run b4 they would still get caught. These newer cars just make drivin more fun for the cops. Theyre usin tax payer money on somthing tht desnt really matter bc even b4 and now no matter how much power u wer puttin out, unless u are the ghost rider with his epic subi vids outrunnin helicopters. goodluck outrunnin a radio.
So you're not impressed that a V6 gets the same performance as a V8? If you're concerned that the taxpayers money is being spent in a careless manner you should also realize that the new more efficient power plant will reduce gas consumption for the police force. That translates to big savings when you take into account the number of patrols driving on the streets on a daily basis.
Lomas, I have to disagree with your statement about the Crown Vic's V8 powerplant producing 280 hp. Not true. What's true is the Ford CVPIs are rated at 250hp and 300lbs/torque. And the cop cruiser version of the Dodge Charger does not produce 400hp either. However, the Dodge Charger SRT-8 (not to be confused with the Charger R/T V8) does produce 400+ hp and it seem inaccurate that it just runs 14.4 seconds on a quarter mile. And the Dodge Charger R/T is the most common trim level vehicle used as police interceptors.
The quality of the new Ford Police Cruiser and SUV is certainly more efficient than the Crown Vic. In addition, the new cruiser powerplants are equipped with either a naturally aspirated 3.5 v6 (263hp)or the ecoboost 3.5 v6 (365hp) twin turbo. So that means those law breakers out there are going to be unable to out run these new cruisers. Better watch out! =P
Dre v8 mustang (prev gen) got 300hp i no 4cyl cars with tht same power and theyre lighter. Johnny i forgot to put srt my bad. But yeh 14.4 was the best time. If memory serves u got 14.2 with just a chip and intake on a 4cyl car. U have to member the cop edition charger is also 200lbs heavier thn reg srt charger. For every 400lbs a car is 1sec faster or slower dependin if ur addin it or takin it off. And if u still have a prob believein 14.4 thn go argue with the editors and test drivers of the magazine road and track.
